2010 Siduri Soberanes Vineyard Pinot Noir,
Santa Lucia Highlands
The 2010 Pinot Noir Soberanes emerges from the glass with dark berries, spices, menthol, licorice and new leather. There is an attractive fleshiness to the 2010 that is quite appealing. This is the first crop from a newly developed parcel right next to Garys’ but planted with a different row direction and tighter spacing than at Garys’. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016.
Adam Lee describes 2011 as the coldest vintage he has ever seen. Nevertheless, the 2011 Pinots are very, very pretty, and also in line with previous years in terms of their overall quality. Severe selection was the only way to do that, and it is quite clear that is exactly what Lee did. A higher percentage of barrels ended up in the appellation wines, a testament to the exacting standards at Siduri. I tasted all of the 2011s as final blends, from barrel. Lee planned to bottle the 2011s in August, 2012, with the exception of the Soberanes, Rosella’s and Garys’, all of which are a scheduled to go into bottle in January, 2013. The 2010 Pinots spent 10 months in barrel and were bottled in August, 2011. Lee told me his parcels experienced heat spikes in both August and September, but judging by the wines, he made the right calls before and after. Timing, as they say, is everything.
2011Siduri Sierra Mar Vineyard Pinot Noir, Santa Lucia Highlands
Siduri’s 2011 Pinot Noir Sierra Mar sparkles on the palate with vibrant dark fruit, menthol, spices and licorice. In 2011, the Sierra Mar stands apart for its mid-palate pliancy, richness and depth, none of which was easy to achieve in this cool vintage. In 2011, Adam Lee chose three out of four clones he works with on the site for his vineyard-designate bottling, a choice that seems to be paying off big time. This is another wine that offers much to look forward to. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2016.
2010 Siduri Sierra Mar Vineyard Pinot Noir, Santa Lucia Highlands
Readers will find a wonderfully complete wine in 2010 Pinot Noir Sierra Mar. It is beautifully layered from start to finish, with gorgeous depth in its black fruit, leather, mint, licorice and spices. The Sierra Mar is one of the richer, weightier wines in the Siduri lineup. I am very impressed with the quality of the 2010, just the second crop off this newly developed site in the southern part of the appellation. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2015.
2011 Siduri Rosella’s Vineyard Pinot Noir, Santa Lucia Highlands
One of the more promising 2011s, Siduri’s 2011 Pinot Noir
Rosella’s shows the freshness of the year in its lip-smacking acidity,
although there is more than enough fruit to provide balance. Sweet dark
red cherries, flowers and spices come together in this impeccable,
refined Pinot. This is a terrific showing for the year. Anticipated
2010 Siduri Rosella’s Vineyard Pinot Noir, Santa Lucia Highands
An intriguing, high-toned profile of sweet red cherries, licorice
and mint emerges from the 2010 Pinot Noir Rosella’s. This is an
especially bright, focused style of Pinot. A finessed, pointed finish
rounds things out nicely. The blend of five clones planted in this site
works beautifully here. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2015.
2011 Siduri Pisoni Vineyard Pinot Noir, Santa Lucia Highlands
Although a bit understated, the 2011 Pinot Noir Pisoni is
nicely layered in this vintage. The 2011 is a relatively laid back wine
from the Pisoni vineyard, yet there is wonderful finesse and a nuanced,
textured quality to the fruit that is highly appealing. Sweet cherries,
flowers, herbs, spices and crushed rocks flow through to the pointed
finish. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2016.
2010 Siduri Pisoni Vineyard Pinot Noir, Santa Lucia Highlands
The 2010 Pinot Noir Pisoni is direct and frank. Layers of dark
red fruit burst from this energetic, focused wine. There is good depth,
but the aromas and flavors don’t quite have the complexity or
delineation of the very best Pinots here. Still, it is impossible not
to admire the sheer purity of the fruit that comes off Pisoni.
Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016.
2011 Siduri Clos Pepe Vineyard Pinot Noir, Santa Rita Hills
Another promising wine, the 2011 Pinot Noir Clos Pepe shows
lovely density and depth for the year. There is a purity to the fruit
that is quite striking. This is another pretty 2011 Pinot from Siduri.
In 2011, the Clos Pepe has a bit of whole clusters (something of a
stylistic departure for Siduri) that adds an attractive, floral
dimension on the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016.
2010 Siduri Clos Pepe Vineyard Pinot Noir, Santa Rita Hills
A great wine to end this tasting with, the 2010 Pinot Noir Clos
Pepe wraps around the palate with juicy dark red fruit, spices, flowers
and mint. There is a juicy, expressive quality to the fruit that is
highly appealing. This is a fabulous Clos Pepe, considering so many
2010s from this site are wilted, tired and heavily marked by the heat
spikes. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2026.
2010 Siduri Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir
The 2010 Pinot Noir (Santa Rita Hills) shows lovely roundness and
depth in its fruit. Dark red cherries, spices and licorice are woven
together nicely in this juicy, expressive Pinot. Once again, I am
struck by the sheer quality and deliciousness of an appellation-level
Siduri Pinot. In 2010, the blend is 60% Clos Pepe, 32% Cargasacchi and
8% Sebastiano. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016.
