2008 Siduri Pisoni Vineyard Pinot Noir

It is hard for us to believe that this wine is our 12th Pisoni Vineyard Pinot Noir. In some ways it seems like only yesterday that Gary Pisoni first showed us around his vineyard and we picked out the section of the Big Block that has been ours ever since. We have added some additional sections of the vineyard since our first Pisoni vintage in 1997, getting fruit from the Hermanos and Tina’s blocks (and adding 2 extra rows of Big Block)….all of which have provided us with even more raw material to produce a more compelling and complex Pisoni Pinot Noir.

Over the last couple of vintages we have been working very closely with Mark Pisoni, Gary’s oldest son, to produce an even better Siduri Pisoni Vineyard Pinot Noir. Specifically, we have been pruning the vineyard later, in hopes of delaying ripening and increasing hang time. We have also been experimenting with varying levels of cropping figuring out exactly what provides us with the highest quality fruit in a given vintage.

The end result is that, in 2008, we have produced our most compelling Pisoni Vineyard Pinot Noir in quite a few years. The wine, quite simply, is Siduri Pisoni Vineyard Pinot Noir turned up a notch or two. This wine shows incredible fruit concentration, with blue and blackberry pie flavors, hints of warm earth and spice (perhaps from some of the whole clusters used in the ferment), and a full, long finish. Unfortunately, this is also one of our most limited production Pisoni Vineyard Pinot Noirs, down 43% from 2007, so if you want to acquire some please do not hesitate.

92 Points : Although the collection of 2008 Siduri Pinot Noir is held back as a group by its very obvious youth, this outstanding effort from Pisoni Vineyard is so deep in classic varietal fruit and so very well- balanced that its credentials are already clear. Charged by lots of sweet red cherries and highlighted with touches of violets and cream, it exhibits absolutely terrific concentration and verve and never gives ground to runaway ripeness. Its velvety suggestions bode quite well for age, and those with the willpower to resist its almost irresistible charms for a couple of years are in store for a genuine treat.
